5. Categories

Helpful Advice:
Take your time and get it right, try not to change the Groups or categories too often. As search engines index your site under your domain, computers, windows etc then all items will carry the URL address. If the group or categories keep changing then so does the computer path to the group or category. The result of this action is that Google and such like will re-index your site but the result is that the pages already indexed will then point to a non-existent site. Less frequent changes results in better optimisation of your site.

Remember:
To help understand the difference between Groups and categories we will use Mobile phones as an example

The Brand in our example could be Nokia
The Groups would be the types of product. For example: phones and accessories.
The Categories would therefore be such things as sim-cards, Re-conditioned Phones and Sim-free Phones.

This of course applies to any product you wish to sell. Not all products will have both group and category but you decide how you wish to present your products. As you manage a data based web site, all this is done in real time where you don't need to fight any technical problems.

Now let’s click on the “Categories” tab from the menu across the top.

Groups and categories
  1. Having already added the Brand as Nokia, the Group as Mobiles we will now as the Category. For this example we will add Phone Covers/Cases.
  1. In the space marked “Category Name: “type the name Phone Covers/Cases. Next to this you will see” create in group:” next to this is a drop down menu. All the Groups you have added so far will be listed in the drop down menu.
  1. Select the chosen Group; for our example we will select “Mobile Phones”.  At this point all that is left to do is click on “Add new category
  1. You will see the following message appear: Category "Phone Covers/Cases" added.
  1. You will also see the category listed as you have entered it. See example below:
Groups and categories

Repeat the same process and add all the categories you wish to use in your store. You can still add more or alter them later on.

All these Categories can of course be changed later any time. You can change the current name of the Category by simply typing the new name over the old name and pressing the RENAME button.

  1. Use “Rename” to change the listed name or correct an error. Simply type the new group name over the old name and click “Rename”. This will be updated immediately and will show at the beginning of the relevant line.

If you are simply updating a present group you will see the following message:

Group name changed.”

  1. Use “Delete” to remove the category. If you wish to remove the category from your Fine Store, click “Delete”. You will then be taken to another screen where you will see a warning:

You are about to delete the group "Phone Covers/Cases".
Do you really want to proceed?

  1. If there are any items attached to the category you will also see the following warning:

Warning this category contains 1 item(s). If you proceed, these items will be deleted.

  1. If you click on “Proceed” the category will be deleted, however if any items have been added you will also delete attached items. If you do not wish to lose the items then simply move them to the category you want them under and then proceed to (5g) again. If you do not wish to delete the category simply click “Cancel”.

The “Hide in store” button is just that. Any category you do not want visible to your customers will remain in your Fine Store but hidden until you wish to use it again. This is particularly useful for seasonal items or categories where you know you will not have stock for a long time so it will look better if not visible. You would simply unclick the “Hide in Store” button to make them reappear instantly again.

If you select “Hide in store” you will receive a confirmation message on the Categories screen:

 Category status changed.

Also next to the category in the list you will see the word “hidden” in red to remind you of your action: Phone Covers/Cases [Hidden]

As a further aide the “Hide in store” button will change to “show in store”.

The final section on the Categories screen is the ability to modify the Group you have placed the category selected. For example you may wish to move Phone covers/Cases from under Mobile Phones to say under Mobiles.

To action simply select the chosen Group from the drop down menu under the column marked group. Once you have chosen the new group the press “modify”. You will then see the following message: Group changed.

Groups and categories

All these changes take place in real time but please ensure you remember to add the Groups and Categories BEFORE you add the items.
